We're creating a world where finding and applying for public benefits is simple, fast, and easy

During the pandemic, Google.org and the City of Seattle launched CiviForm for residents and community organizations to find and apply to multiple programs in one place, and for government teams to streamline services to communities in need. Thousands of Seattle residents have applied for public assistance with the average time to apply reduced from 30 minutes to 5 minutes. CiviForm is collectively developed and maintained by the governments that use it, with pro-bono support from Google.org. In 2023, Exygy began stewarding the next stages of the CiviForm through grant-based funding from Google.org.

CiviForm Streamlines Applications to Safety Net Programs

CiviForm is open-source software that helps expand access to critical public services by simplifying the process of administering and applying to public benefits programs. The web application aims to reduce poverty and build pathways to economic mobility by allowing government teams to connect residents with the approximately $80 billion in safety net funds that go unused each year in the US.

The platform offers residents a centralized hub to find and apply to the full package of benefits available to them. Government teams are in complete control of their own forms - able to launch new programs or make changes based on policy updates at any point. This approach to digitizing services has led to significant impact in time saved and dollars made available. In the City of Seattle, initial outcomes include:

Built with government, for government CiviForm is an open-source software collective, with both government-led governance and contributions, as well as a singular, shared codebase. The software is currently launched and about-to-launch in the State of Arkansas Division of Workforce Services, the City of Seattle, the City of Bloomington, and the City of Charlotte. Miami-Dade County has just kicked off and two major cities are poised to start projects in 2024.
